10 Ways to Keep Your Sanity During Quarantine

In a matter of weeks, the contagious virus, COVID-19, has spread all over the world and countries are issuing lockdowns. The streets are eerily quiet as everyone is cooped up inside their houses, busying themselves watching Netflix.

After a few days, the insanity starts to kick in. You’re wearing the same clothes as three days ago. Your hair is a mess. And you’re laughing hysterically. The memes on Facebook are your only satisfaction. You feel like life has taken a major pause and all you want is for things to get back to normal.

I have a few suggestions for you to keep your sanity during these tough times.

  1. Do not sleep for more than 10 hours per night. Over-sleeping can cause you to wake up still in a daze that you are definitely not going to wake up from. You need your body to feel alive so make sure you sleep just enough hours, but do not over do it.
  2. Do not wear your pyjama’s all day. It may be comfy but you don’t get any work done. If you’re a university student, the chances are you’ll be “listening in” to a lecture on Zoom but actually picturing your bed.
  3. Make a list of things to do every day. Physically writing it down helps motivate you to get your work done. After accomplishing each task, cut a line through it with permanent black marker. The best feeling in the world.
  4. Call your best friends. First off, they can definitely relate to how you’re feeling and can try to help out. Secondly, they know how to make you laugh so start up random talk. You’ll be joking about something before you know it.
  5. Use your precious time to learn about things you didn’t have time to look up pre-coronavirus life. Since we have so much time on our hands, look up documentaries on YouTube. Read a book about any topic that interests you. Look up articles online. Feed your mind with knowledge.
  6. Why not cook something? Now personally, I hate cooking and have no patience for cooking but try a simple recipe! Make a tiramisu cake or coconut balls. It’s a piece of cake. (I’ve got links below)
  7. Look up comedy shows on Netflix or YouTube. My personal favorites are Michael McIntyre and Trevor Noah. Comedy is a good way to get your mind off the current pandemic.
  8. Listen to new music artists and genres! New tunes tend to increase your happiness. Music also tends to distract you from your own thoughts so let’s try to forget about the corona virus, shall we?
  9. Do some physical exercise in your room. If you have never been to a gym or have trained before in your life, YouTube is your best friend. Do not push your body above its limits. Take it easy and focus on mental relaxation.
  10. We tend to cook ready-made, processed foods that you can easily store in the freezer. Why not prepare a healthy and freshly cooked meal instead? We now do not have the excuse of “not having enough time”. This also includes researching what products you are buying, how healthy they are for your body and how environmentally-friendly they are too.

BONUS: Clean the house every single day like my mom. She’s become so bored at home that she’s washing the floor every day. I’m not joking. Keep clean like my OCD mom.

Keep sane! Keep safe! And social-distancing!
